In order to talk about sustainable community indicators, we need a common understanding of
certain terms: sustain, develop, community, and indicator.
As we review these definitions, keep in mind that what we are trying to improve is our
community: not just the environment, not just the economy, not just social behavior, but
all the interwoven pieces that make up the community. Sustainable development is not an
environmental movement. It is a community movement. It is about making our communities
better places to live for all members of the community.
