Purpose of this Training Course

The purpose of this course is to increase participants' understanding of sustainability and sustainable community indicators. The course helps participants understand how indicators can be used at the grassroots level to help initiate and further community sustainability projects. The goals of the course are:
  • To help communities and organizations understand the extent to which their issues are issues of sustainability.

  • To demonstrate that seemingly unrelated issues are often linked together.

  • To help communities and organizations understand the different ways that sustainable community indicators can be used to communicate, clarify and quantify issues, goals and progress.
The day-long course provides an introduction to the concept of sustainability and the use of indicators. The course provides tools for evaluating indicators and sustainability projects. The course is not a lecture; it uses an interactive process to encourage the active involvement of the participants. In addition to learning about how others are defining and working on sustainability, participants will gain direct experience in developing and evaluating potential indicators of sustainability.

The course also highlights useful resources and sources of data for indicators. As a result of attending this workshop, participants will be able to provide more effective outreach to their constituents on issues of sustainability. They will also be able to work more effectively with groups developing indicators, so that those indicators are more aligned with the concepts of sustainability.
