This view of the relationships of a community's economy, society, and
environment recognizes that the three are more intricately connected
than in the previous view. Sustainability indicators are an attempt
to measure the linkages and acknowledge the fact that the overlapping
areas are much greater than the first diagram shows. There are very
few parts of the environment that are not affected by human society
and human economy. Likewise, society is very dependent upon both the
economy that moves goods and services where they are needed and the
environment in which the society exists.
Indicators of sustainability need to highlight the overlap. An
issues-based framework for an indicator set is more likely to measure
the interconnecting areas of these circles.
